Service Dog Training and Education Program @ UMW

Hi! We are the Service Dog Training and Education program at UMW, better known as STEP@UMW. Founded in 2014, our mission is to educate the Mary Washington community and the greater Fredericksburg community about service dogs!

Our club works alongside Canine Companions (CC), a national non-profit providing free service dogs to individuals with disabilities. Each year, we have a few members who interview to become puppy raisers. If approved, those students are then tasked to care for, train, and socialize puppies at UMW and in their communities. Funds raised would be especially beneficial in assisting more members to become puppy raisers and increase their ability to balance school, social life, and puppy raising.

STEP@UMW is not only made up of puppy raisers; we also have general members who enthusiastically aid in educating the community at events such as the Office of Disability Resources’ annual disability table fair. As we don’t charge dues, additional funding would help us to create more events and meeting activities to foster the STEP@UMW community.

Thank you for your support!
