At the University of Mary Washington, more than 190 clubs and organizations fuel student life—through service, civic engagement, academics, the arts, sports, identity, hobbies, and more. These groups are open to all students and are where friendships spark, passions ignite, and leaders are made.
This October, you can help take that experience even further. The student-run clubs below chose to participate in this year's EAGLEfunding and are rallying support to bring their boldest ideas to life. Whether you give to a group close to your heart or one that sparks your own passion, your gift will directly expand what’s possible for UMW students.
And the stakes are high! The club with the most unique donors will unlock $1,000, second place will receive $500, third place $250, and every club with at least 10 donors will be entered in a drawing to win an extra $500. All thanks to Marty Abbott ’72 for generously sponsoring these bonus gifts! Your gift doesn’t just make a difference—it fuels competition, community, and lasting impact.

Global Medical Brigades

Secular, international student-operated volunteer organization whose mission is to provide sustainable development to underserved communities
Secular, international student-operated volunteer organization whose mission is to provide sustainable development to underserved communities UMW’s chapter of Global Medical Brigades is a secular, international student-operated volunteer organization whose mission is to provide sustainable development to underserved communities throughout the world. Along with affiliate groups at other distinguished universities, our University of Mary Washington team recruits student volunteers and professionals, gathers supplies, and then travels overseas to set up free medical and dental clinics in a variety of Panamanian communities. Our organization holds one trip per year, taking place during academic breaks, and provide ongoing year-long educational and professional development opportunities that relate to international health and development to members. Last year, donations allowed us to support UMW student volunteers in the expense of traveling to Panama and collecting supplies!
This year, your support will allow us to lower the donation goal for individual volunteers to make the club more affordable and accessible to students. One of the main reasons students miss out on this amazing opportunity is due to the cost. If they received a little help, many more students would be able to learn so much about healthcare and society in Panama.

Students are able to explore their interests in all aspects of preservation, including architectural history, building trades, archaeology, museum and archival studies, and urban development, through organized museum and historic site visits, skills workshops, and student-choice lectures. We also continue many traditions from our club’s past, such as this year's 42nd Annual Ghostwalk, as well as our revival of Sweetheart’s Ball, which is now entering its third year.
Last year, donations allowed us to purchase new costumes for our Annual Ghostwalk in the fall semester. We were also able to reduce the amount club members must pay for our fall and spring trips. Our Fall trip focused on local organizations and history, and involved visiting the Patowomeck Museum and Cultural Center for a presentation on the tribe’s history and traditions, and a tour of their museum and living history displays. We also visited Ferry Farms, where we focused on the methods of recreating George Washington’s childhood home and had an inside look at their archaeology lab led by a UMW alumni. In the Spring, we took a multi-day trip through Southwestern Virginia. This included a state park ranger-led tour of Natural Bridge, individual explorations of living history at the Frontier Culture Museum and downtown Staunton’s historic architecture, as well as a guided tour of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Museum.
This year, your gift will allow us to make future trips like these financially accessible for students. This includes subsidizing costs for transportation, hotels, and meals, whenever possible, so that more students have the opportunity to visit these sorts of sites and meet the people that sustain them.

Women of Color
By University of Mary Washington
Creates a safe and welcoming space for women here at the University of Mary Washington
Creates a safe and welcoming space for women here at the University of Mary Washington The UMW Women of Color Club's main mission is to create a safe and welcoming space for women here at the University of Mary Washington. We want students to find their people through this club and, most importantly, understand that they are not alone. However, we do not turn anyone away who is not a woman of color or even a woman at all. Our motto is, “We do not discriminate regardless of your race, gender, sexual identity, and/or sexual orientation.” We believe that all students have the right to learn, feel included, and find their place within the university community.
During our meetings, we highlight different women of color who may not receive as much recognition or attention in mainstream spaces. This gives our members the opportunity to learn about inspiring women and discover new and interesting stories that they may have never heard before. Our activities are also based on the woman we feature during each meeting. For example, when we introduce Alicia Yoon, a South Korean businesswoman and the CEO of Peach & Lily, a brand that helped establish the foundation for the U.S. K-Beauty industry, our activity might focus on self-care. This could include makeup, skincare, hair care, and relaxation tips. By connecting our activities to the women we highlight, we are able to make our meetings both educational and interactive.
In addition to our regular meetings, we also like to give back to our community. Each year, we try to host two fundraisers and one donation drive. For example, last fall, we held a lemonade stand at the beginning of the semester and a hot chocolate stand toward the end of the semester. The following spring, we hosted a donation drive and donated to Empower House, an organization that supports victims of domestic violence in the DMV area by providing them with the time, care, and resources they need to heal.
Finally, during the spring semester, we try to host one major event for the UMW community. Last spring, we hosted a poetry slam at the Cedric Rucker University Center that was open to both UMW students and commuters. The event encouraged students to express their creativity, share their own work, and introduce others to their favorite poets and pieces of poetry.
With your support, you will help us get material for our meetings to be more interactive and broad for our students via arts and crafts, decorations for future fundraising events, and allow us to host more events and fundraising on campus.

Women's Ultimate Frisbee
By University of Mary Washington
Fosters a community of ultimate frisbee on campus while providing a fun, exciting, and engaging place to be
Fosters a community of ultimate frisbee on campus while providing a fun, exciting, and engaging place to be UMW Women’s Ultimate Frisbee is a club sport that fosters a community of ultimate frisbee on campus while providing a fun, exciting, and engaging place to be. We participate in collegiate tournaments on the Atlantic Coast that provide competition and engagement with other colleges in the area. Last year, donations allowed us to cover tournament registration fees and travel expenses, including gas and hotels, ultimately reducing the cost of dues for student players and making participation more accessible.
This year, your gift will once again help cover tournament registration fees and travel expenses, including gas and hotels, as well as any equipment needed. Your support will also allow us to continue to lower the club due rates for the student players.

We believe crafting is beneficial because it reduces stress, enhances mental focus, and provides a sense of accomplishment through the creation of tangible, beautiful items. Throughout the year, we gather regularly for themed workshops and collaborative projects. Yarnworks strives to help people achieve their crafting dream and improve creative ability.
With your support, we plan to purchase high-quality yarn and tools as well as expand our workshops and events with food and prizes for our members. These gifts will ensure that we can continue to spread warmth and kindness through our craft for years to come.

Young Democratic Socialists of America

Educate and organize students and young people and to play a helpful and principled role in the movement for social justice
Educate and organize students and young people and to play a helpful and principled role in the movement for social justice Our mission is to educate and organize students and young people and to play a helpful and principled role in the movement for social justice. Within and throughout this struggle, we will articulate and defend the idea that true human liberation is impossible under capitalism. We seek social change, which extends democracy into all aspects of life – social, political, and economic. This is the struggle for democratic socialism. Our vision of socialism is profoundly democratic, feminist, and anti-racist. Last year, donations allowed us to secure free Plan B at the student health center for all students. We also created a free laundry program in which students in need can apply for a voucher covering one load of laundry every week for one semester for free.
Your support will fund general club operations and specific campaigns that benefit UMW and the Fredericksburg community, such as continuing to fund our Plan B and free laundry initiatives.

Widen and increase the interest and knowledge of young people in government and the political process of the Democratic party
Widen and increase the interest and knowledge of young people in government and the political process of the Democratic party The purpose of UMWYD is to widen and increase the interest and knowledge of young people in government and the political process of the Democratic party. We aim to increase the role of underrepresented people in our party, government, and society, and to serve those in need in our community. Our vision is to be a hub for Democratic youth engagement, cultivating the leaders of today and tomorrow.
Your gift will go towards supporting club members and improving support for our club activities, including helping us travel to conventions put on by Virginia Young Dems and other democratic events and providing valuable networking and learning opportunities.
