Since 1982, the Historic Preservation Club has been a beacon of preservation at UMW. As a student-run organization, we are proud to be one of the oldest clubs on campus. Currently, the club is thriving with a large membership, and our alumni are making significant contributions to the preservation world. Our activities, including museum visits, internship forums, and historic gingerbread house competitions, are some of the ways we dedicate ourselves to the education of our community and ourselves. However, our renown on campus comes from the annual Ghostwalk event.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the club’s annual Ghost Walk event, and our leadership is doing as much as they can to make it a year to remember. The event takes place out of the James Monroe Museum in Downtown Fredericksburg for two nights on Friday, October 25th, and Saturday, October 26th. This is the largest event and fundraiser for the year, drawing students, alumni, community members, and families alike. Thanks to the club membership, the students have been able to research the sites, design the costumes and makeup, lead tours, and even join in providing first-hand ghost encounters with their acting skills.
Due to the scale of this event, it is also costly to put on. The club prepares for certain expenses each year, especially regarding the costuming portion of the event. However, the club hopes to revitalize its costumes this year by providing more historically accurate pieces. The significant amount of research done by the students on each of the sites is only one half of the educational quality of Ghostwalk. By de-modernizing our ghoulish frocks, we can create a more professional, immersive, and interactive experience for all attendees.
Your gift will support our organization's mission and allow students the flexibility to create quality pieces for this year's 40th anniversary Ghostwalk. It will be a walk to remember!
