The UMW Fencing Club is one of the only places on campus where it is legal to stab your friends, goes a common club joke. Being able to use swords is definitely a large part of our appeal, but it isn’t the only thing that makes us special. Fencing is a martial art and sport with a long history that is not commonly known, and our mission is to make it accessible to everyone that is interested. This means the club does not require members to have any prior experience or particular athletic skill before joining. It’s a super low-pressure, inclusive, fun space to make friends while learning a really cool sport!
Throughout the year, the Fencing Club teaches new and returning members alike the basics of fencing, from footwork to swordsmanship, as well as the complex rules and history behind the sport. This includes both regular practices with simple equipment, as well as “electric days” where we hold informal tournaments with electric equipment and scoreboards. On top of that, there will also be fundraisers, group bonding activities like movie nights, and tournaments. It’s a lot of fun, and having more money will be vital in terms of helping us accomplish these things. Donated money will go towards the improvement of our equipment; we always need high-quality fencing jackets in a variety of sizes, as well as things like gloves and helmets. Having swords in good condition and tools to properly fix them is also a priority, particularly for tournaments. We would also love for funds to go towards merch like shirts and jackets to spread the spirit of fencing!
