William H. “Bill” Leighty graduated from Mary Washington in 1978 with a degree in economics. Bill credits the education he received at Mary Washington along with the guidance he received from his professors at Mary Washington in leading him to a distinguished career in public service. Martha “Marti” Kearns Leighty served on the University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors from July 2004 through June 2012. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Mary Washington in 1975 and earned a Master of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Leighty Fellows program is a semester-long or summer internship program for University of Mary Washington junior and senior students to work with a Virginia state legislator, public official, or state agency. The experience is designed to highlight and foster opportunities for UMW students to enter public service careers with experienced-based engagements that support their professional development.
The program will provide students with an inside look at state government and the political process. Additionally, the internship program will include opportunities for the cohort to build a networking community among each other, as well as with alumni and friends of the University across the Commonwealth.
The internship is open to all majors and prepares students for a wide variety of careers – not just politics.
